Mark Bartkiw, is a photographic artist with twenty years of experience since studying photography at Sheridan College. While in Toronto he has worked in a range of genre including editorial, portrait, advertising, fashion and music industry photography.
Since moving to rural Ontario, Bartkiw’s emphasis has shifted from freelance photography to creating new bodies of work that focus on his personal vision.
The quiet environment and opportunity to reflect on his natural surroundings have allowed him to respond to the details of the organic micro world and the atmospheric effects of macro views. Bartkiw uses repurposed optical technology of vanishing analogue photographic equipment. Through his sophisticated understanding of in-camera depth of field control, he creates images that transform his subject matter into enigmatic and abstracted sculptural forms, cloaked in dark mystery and mood. These painterly images engage the viewer through their quiet attention to detail and minimalistic simplicity.
The imaginary world has unlimited potential. When I reach back into my childhood where I could create anything and was totally in charge, I created scenes and worlds that were my alternate and necessary reality. I could make a tent in the living room where science fiction and toys became my universe. As an artist, this has evolved into the opportunity to revive play in order to create implied narratives.
